New Season – 3 Matches In

fullsizeoutput_3

The 2019 season is now well underway with the first 3 matches having come and gone in relatively quick succession.

Dudley Rod’n’Reel is pleased to be back up to full strength member wise with 16 paid up members for 2019.

Match 1 – Monkhall Fishery – Swallow Pool

Quickly becoming a club favourite venue with the fishing narrowly rivalled by the quality of the breakfast on offer.  Ben and the rest of the team from Monkhall really should feel proud of what they have built up at Monkhall and this is a place we look forward to returning to soon.

Carl Gibbons was the angler to record the first win of 2019 with a winning weight of 62lb with last years League Champion Craig Cash a close second with 60lb 12oz.  New member Matt Aldritt framed on his debut taking third with 56lb.

2019 Match Report 1

Match 2 – Jam Factory – Old Pool

My goodness I think we are still recovering from the storm like conditions that we encountered at the Jam Factory in match 2 on Old Pool.  I don’t know about pole floats we needed Pike Floats to be able to present a bait with what were like waves you could surf on at times.

Despite the conditions it was the Pinkie master Craig Baker who managed an impressive weight of 63lb 8oz to take first place with Roger Pierce taking second with 54lb 12oz.  Third place went to Joe Bunting with 53lb dead.

2019 Match Report 2

Match 3 – Boldings Pools – Chestnut

A little less blustery but clearly a pool of two halves when we moved on to match 3 at Bolding’s fishing Chestnut.  Pegs 1 to 8 being on the dam wall failed to produce anything of any real note with the better weights coming from the pegs opposite and around the island and the peg on the point lived  up to its previous reputation.

But it was Craig Cash returning to form taking first place with 39lb 14oz with Carl Gibbons on the point for second with 33lb 4oz.  Matt Aldritt was in the frame again taking 3rd with 28lb 6oz.

2019 Match Report 3

After the first 3 matches in the league table is starting to look a little less bonkers.  The craziness follows the introduction from this season a second dropped match.

Things should now start to settle down and the league table will begin to make a bit more sense.

The recent change in weather must have had an impact as weights were fairly low in our penultimate match of the 2018 season at Bolding’s Pools on Chestnut Lake.

The match was won by Matt Southall with 43lb dead with Carl Lovell a very close second with 42lb dead.  Craig Cash was 3rd with 41lb 12 oz and Wayne Southall 4th with 39lb dead.

Match 11 Sunday 23rd September 2018 – Boldings Pools – Chestnut

New Picture (40)

Venue: Boldings Pools, Astley Abbotts, Bridgnorth, Shropshire, WV16 4SS

Pool: Chestnut

Date: Sunday 23rd September 2018

Fishing Time: 10am to 3pm

Peg Draw: 8:45am prompt

Venue Details:

Boldings Pools is a mature and well-established complex nestled in beautiful Shropshire countryside. The fishery enjoys an ideal location, only 3 miles from the picturesque market-town of Bridgnorth and not far from the historic towns of Ironbridge and Much Wenlock.

You will find a choice of around 300 comfortable pegs across 14 well-stocked pools, varying in size from 10 to 50 pegs. The pools are open throughout the year and can cater for pleasure anglers, club and open matches, as well as corporate days.

A range of good-value sit-down and take-away breakfasts and snacks are available from the 1st class on-site cafe (please phone for opening times).

Two large carparks, a match room, as well as toilet facilities, are situated at the entrance and parking is free. Disabled badge holders may, with permission, drive to their chosen pool.

All pools have a similar stocking density, consisting of mainly Carp (Common, Mirror, Ghost, Crucian & hybrid) running to double figures in all pools, and with a Boldings record now standing at over 25lb; Tench – 4lb+, Bream – 6lb+, Roach – 2lb+, Rudd -1lb+ and Perch – 4lb+.

Records have risen year on year and presently stand at 248lb and 265lb for open and club matches, respectively.

Chestnut Pool

The Chestnut is one of the larger pools at Boldings with 40 pegs. It is very popular water for club and open matches, but is often available for the pleasure angler to fish

Although mainly stocked with various types of carp (up to over 22lb) the Chestnut can also produce some large catches of bream, up to around 4lb, along with a multitude of other species.

Popular ‘feature’ pegs of this pool include the island and the ‘point’, although any regular match angler will tell you that this is not a ‘peggy’ pool and can be won from anywhere. In fact all the pools are kept as evenly stocked as possible, so that when larger matches and events are hosted, it is almost impossible to tell where the winning weight will come from.
This has proved to be true when Boldings has hosted rounds of ‘FishO’Mania –  each year, different pools and pegs have produced the winning weight. In fact, in the competitions first year, Chestnut 40 almost slipped under the radar of the Sky TV cameras when it produced a superb weight, narrowly beating Beech peg 30.

Health & Disability and your fishing – Angling Trust Survey

The Angling Trust is conducting an important survey to find out how many people who go fishing are influenced by their health levels or disability, how this can affect their fishing and what can be done to provide support.

So far thousands of anglers have taken part in the survey. We don’t want your members to miss the opportunity to be involved or the chance to win £200 of Amazon Gift Cards.

The Angling Trust encourage members of Dudley Rod’n’Reel Angling Club to take part in the survey by clicking on the link below.

MATCH 10 – SUNDAY 2ND SEPTEMBER 2018 – LOWER BROADHEATH FISHERY (JAM FACTORY) – ISLAND POOL

Known locally as ‘the jam factory’ because it can be found down a track behind a former jam factory off the main Worcester to Tenbury Road, Lower Broadheath fishery is an example of how success breeds success.

The venue started life in 1975 as an old irrigation pool which was bought by arable farmer John Jordan who owns the land which overlooks the fishery.

Having bought what is now known as Old Pool, John found he was increasingly being asked by anglers if they could fish the water. When he realised its fame was spreading he decided to build a second pool to cater for the increased demand for angling.

Old Pool at Lower Broadheath FisheryAs a result there are now six pools at the fishery which offers a mix of pleasure and match angling in waters which hold carp to 35lbs plus big bream and tench, chub to 5lbs, decent quality roach and perch fishing, crucian carp, rudd and even a head of stillwater barbel. The average depth of all pools with the exception of Elgar Pool is about 10 feet.

For many of the regulars, one of the attractions of Lower Broadheath is that you never know what you are going to catch next whilst honorary bailiffs Terry Gough and Ken Lower are usually on hand and are happy to offer visitors to the fishery advice on the best baits, techniques and places to fish.

A nice peg on Willow Pool at Lower Broadheath FisheryHowever, because Lower Broadheath is a popular match water, it is often busy at weekends, although there is usually a good choice of available pegs mid-week when the venue is quieter.

As with many fisheries these days, trout pellets, trout pellet paste, groundbait and liquidised baits of any kind are not allowed and the maximum permitted hook size is Size 8.

Another nice fish comes to the net on Willow Pool at Lower Broadheath FisheryAnglers are also advised that only carp pellets, maggots, worm, casters, luncheon meat, sweetcorn, hemp, cheese, prawn, bolilies on the hook and sinking bread can be used for hookbait.

However, unlike many fisheries, keepnets can be used although anglers should return fish over 5lbs to water after unhooking.

In addition, because of the possible danger to other anglers and animals, luncheon meat, sweetcorn and other tins should not be taken onto the fishery. As a result, anglers should prepare these baits in advance and pack them in bait boxes before leaving home.

Elgar Pool at the far end of Lower Broadheath FisheryAlthough the floating bait ban may seem unusual, this is a practice being introduced by several fisheries as inexperienced anglers who fish floating baits tend to strike at a take as they would a submerged bait. As there is little or no water resistance, the resultant strike can often severely damage a carp’s mouth.

Anglers should also be aware that, because there are a lot of good sized carp in all the Lower Broadheath waters, they may need to scale up their line strength.

Island Pool

2015island002

A pleasure water with over 300 double figure fish, Island Pool offers plenty of space for Club matches and plenty of fish for the competitors – so much so that even when not being fished for matches it is a popular pleasure water and well worth a visit.

2015island001

The largest known fish to come out of Island Pool to date was a 32lb 9oz common carp caught by Colin Corbett early in 2005 on luncheon meat.

Although Island is well-established, it seems that over the past couple of years this pool has really come into its own with most anglers preferring to fish along the two main banks, rather than either end of the pool, where there is a ledge which runs the length of the pool. Although it is traditional in waters like this for people to fish on top of the ledge, that doesn’t seem to work on Island and the most favoured technique is to fish a small ledger down the face of the ledge where it runs into deeper water.

2015island003

In addition to the usual mix of carp, roach, rudd and some tremendous crucian carp, Island Pool is also home to an unusual blue strain of carp which have been nicknamed ‘Blueys’ because of their colouring. These fish have a reputation for fighting three times as hard as conventional carp with anglers likening them to a double decker bus once they get going!

In addition there is a small head of shubunkins up to 2lbs plus and some koi carp.

As may be expected, the most favoured techniques for fishing Island Pool is the pole with sweetcorn, luncheon meat, chopped worm and maggots again being favoured baits.

Rules

No paste.
No macaroni cheese.
No Hemp.
No Liquidized baits.
No Trout pellets.
No Groundbait.
Largest hook you can use is a size 12

Only carp pellets, maggots, worm, casters, luncheon meat, sweetcorn and sinking bread can be used for hookbait.

No tins bankside

Moorlands is recognised as one of the premier fishing venues in the country as illustrated by the fact that it has hosted pestigious events such as the Kamasan British Open, Drennan All Winners Final, Fish-O-Mania qualifiers, Angling Times / Maiver Pairs Challenge and NFA / Angling Trust National Championships.

Situated on a 10 acre site Moorlands offers 200 pegs on a total of ten pools varying in sizes. To ensure that competitors taking part in the matches stand the same chance of catching wherever they fish, all the pools have been developed to the same depths and uniform stocking policy has been implemented to ensure that each pool carries the same density and proportion of fish species.

Facilities include ample free car parking (anglers being able to park behind most pegs), 120 seater licensed café which serves a wide range of meals, snacks and refreshments.

Moors Pool

With Meadow and Bank, Moors Pool is one of the three main match waters at Moorlands Farm. Despite holding only 21 match pegs, the record for a five hour match with a mixed bag of Carp, Roach and Bream, currently stands at 226lbs 4ozs.

About an acre in size, Moors Pool is the fourth largest of the waters and again offers a uniform depth and uniformity of stocking to ensure anglers can catch whichever peg they are drawn on. Moors Pool is one of the deepest pools down the margins making it ideal to catch large bags of fish close in.

Car parking is available behind all of the pegs.

Moors Pool is shown on the map above as Pool E

Ken Robinson Memorial 2018

Many will know that last year Dudley Rod n Reel lost member and freind Ken Robinson.

The Club held a collection for a wreath and with the remaining money committed to remembering Ken through holding a memorial match each season.

Today’s match at Woodlands View on the Ghost Pool was dedicated as Ken’s memorial match for 2018.

It was therefore fitting that Ken’s Son in Law Craig Cash won the match and took the Ken Robinson Memorial trophy in its first year.

Congratulations Craig … Ken would be proud.

Information regarding the match will be posted in due course.
